What is ALS?

ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)

An incurable disease in which motor neurons that move the body age, and the whole body gradually becomes immobile.
Degeneration of the motor nerves prevents the transmission of commands to the muscles, causing muscle weakness. However, consciousness, the five senses, and intelligence remain normal.

The average life expectancy after the onset of the disease is said to be 3 to 5 years. There are 350,000 people worldwide and about 10,000 in Japan who are diagnosed with ALS.
The progression of ALS causes symptoms such as motion problems due to paralysis of the limbs, communication problems, and swallowing problems. Finally, breathing problems occur, requiring the person to be fitted with a ventilator to prolong life.
The disease progresses extremely rapidly, and currently no effective treatment has been established for the cure.
